Call4Peace
Palestine & Israel: Peace grounded in international law

Call for leadership and action from the Belgian Presidency of the European Union

100 signatories, former ministers, high-ranking diplomats, prominent scholars, humanitarian leaders, writers, artists, spiritual leaders and Nobel Peace Prize laureates, are addressing an urgent call to the European Union, through the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU, to take action to help bring peace to Palestine and Israel. We deeply regret the lack of leadership from Europe and are appalled by the weak reactions from the international community to the extreme violence in Gaza and Israel. We denounce the horrors perpetrated by Hamas on Israel on Oct. 7th, which ensued with hostages still captive to this day, as well as the disproportionate military action by Israeli forces, which has resulted in mass destruction in Gaza and an unprecedented rate of civilian killing among Palestinians. The European Union cannot wait to act. We propose 9 immediate measures – enshrined in international law – which provide a roadmap for action. While not a peace plan in itself, these measures can have an immediate impact to create the conditions for lasting peace and justice.
